The other side of the fire....   |   Sunday, August 1, 2010

What does faith teach us about ourselves? How can we have hope in the midst of the fire? What can we learn about ourselves when we're fighting for our lives?
It seems as though each one of these women has something else to offer... finding inner strength that they never knew they had. Learning about what's really important in life. Learning to receive love and support from so many around them.... from those they never knew even cared. As women, wives and mothers, we always seem to be better 'givers' than 'receivers'. Cancer puts us in a vulnerable place as women, in so many ways. Not only have they lost their hair, YIKES... , but they are then put in the very uncomfortable place of having to 'receive' care from others. For me, this is a very uncomfortable place. I'm a MUCH better 'giver' than 'receiver.' I hope each woman that reads this will begin to receive. Take the care and love that is offered from those around you! Soak up the support of other women going through the same battle. It will make you a much better giver in the future, when you're on the other side of the fire.
Lori P. is on the other side of the fire. She has lost her hair and 2 months post chemo, it's coming back with a vengeance. She marvels that "it's coming back CURLY!" And thicker than it ever was. She's still questioning her appearance... fretting a bit about being 'not-photogenic', especially after cancer. But I can't see anything but courage, confidence and peace. She is quite beautiful and most times, women don't feel beautiful, even when they are. They just can't see it themselves, but it's there... and I'll find it!

Lori is my sister and my best friend. She has faced cancer with determination, a fierce "I WILL BEAT THIS" attitude but always with a smile on her face for everyone around her. She does not realize that her beauty smiles on everyone she meets. She makes friends easily as she is the most caring, friendly and genuine person you could meet. During her treatment, she always brought smiles and laughter to those around her. Even at her lowest low, no one knew it. She would make everyone in the waiting room light up when she walked in the room because of her beautiful smile, warm words and gentle touch. She is beautiful both inside and out. She has a beauty that even cancer cannot take away. It only made her stronger and more gorgeous. I am proud to be her sister and proud to be her best friend
